With: MakerChange.

Role: Web Design and Web Development

Papua Partners is an international NGO working to secure peace, justice, and sustainable futures for the indigenous peoples of West Papua. In collaboration with MakerChange, I worked on the redesign and development of their website – shifting the visual language from a ‘church-oriented’ feel to modern and action-oriented.

The goal was to create a platform that conveys the urgency of the West Papuan struggle while making the organisation’s broad work – from education to environmental justice – clear and emotionally resonant for a UK audience.

Where we started

The original site was dense and outdated, with a layout that didn’t reflect the scale or nuance of the organisation’s work. Additionally, the team needed a CMS that would be easy for local Papuan staff to update independently.

We needed to bring clarity to the content structure, shift the visual tone, and guide users through the complex, interwoven issues at play without overwhelming them.

The website spotlights diverse interventions and pressing issues faced by indigenous West Papuans. The design has an action-oriented feel, whilst prioritising good user experience and navigability.

Design Approach

Working from the refreshed branding created by MakerChange, I translated the identity into a digital experience focused on clarity, narrative, and emotional connection.

  • I used a storytelling approach to present the vast amount of information on West Papua and the conflict in a digestible way.
  • Structured the website and CMS with accessibility and ease-of-maintenance in mind, ensuring the Papuan team could manage content going forward.
  • Selected impactful imagery and used clean layouts to help users connect with human stories and real-world impact.

The vast amount of information on the West Papua and the conflict is presented in a digestible way through a storytelling approach.

Outcome

The redesigned site positions Papua Partners as a modern, agile organisation with deep roots and global relevance. It offers users a clearer understanding of the challenges in West Papua and encourages action, engagement, and support.
